RAZORSAW Super KENRYÛ Japanese pruning saw: cutting performance and manufacturing quality

The RAZORSAW Super KENRYÛ 270 mm is a Japanese pruning saw designed for tree pruning, branch removal and general tree maintenance.

Developed for arborists, landscapers, gardeners and tree care professionals, it combines a 270 mm straight blade with teeth specifically suited to cutting green wood.

The RAZORSAW Super KENRYÛ combines the precision of a modern Japanese pruning saw with the pleasure of using a tool fitted with a natural beech wood handle and sheath. Its understated, robust and functional design reflects the high manufacturing standards of Japanese cutting tool makers.

The 742W version differs from the synthetic EVA Grip model through its natural wooden components, without compromising cutting performance.

Tooth geometry designed for cutting green wood

The Super KENRYÛ features a 270 mm straight blade with a 4 mm tooth pitch (approximately 6.4 teeth per inch).

This relatively coarse tooth spacing promotes efficient chip removal when cutting branches and helps prevent clogging in fresh wood.

Special teeth for improved sawdust and chip removal

The blade features a special rip tooth every 13 teeth, designed to help clear sawdust and wood chips during cutting. This arrangement helps reduce the accumulation of cutting debris, particularly in green wood, and promotes smooth, consistent sawing.

A taper-ground blade with teeth without set

The Super KENRYÛ features a taper-ground blade, gradually thinning towards the back, combined with teeth without set.

This geometry helps reduce friction and the risk of binding while providing a clean, fine, precise cut. With a nominal blade thickness of 1.1 mm and a kerf width of just 1.15 mm, it delivers efficient cutting with minimal material removal.

Like traditional Japanese saws, the Super KENRYÛ cuts primarily on the pull stroke: the teeth engage the wood as the user draws the blade towards them.

This cutting action provides good control over the effort applied and allows accurate blade guidance, particularly during arboricultural pruning.

Beech wood handle and sheath: simplicity and comfort

The natural beech wood handle provides a pleasant tactile feel and a comfortable grip. Its design prioritises simplicity and functionality.

The matching beech wood sheath protects the blade during storage and transport. It complements the saw's understated appearance while providing suitable protection for its teeth.

This model uses wood for both the handle and sheath, an appealing feature for users who appreciate natural materials.

A 270 mm straight blade for arboricultural work

The 270 mm blade provides a comfortable cutting stroke for medium to relatively large branches.

Its straight profile makes blade guidance easier and is particularly suitable for:

  • Pruning fruit trees and ornamental trees.

  • Arboricultural pruning and tree maintenance.

  • Cutting branches and green wood.

  • Working in gardens, orchards and wooded areas.

A narrow blade tip for accessing tight branch forks

The blade has a progressively increasing height, measuring just 15 mm at the tip and 34 mm at the base, near the handle. This geometry makes it easier to insert the saw tip into narrow branch forks and densely branched areas, where a wider blade could make positioning difficult. It provides greater freedom when positioning the saw for accurate cuts in confined or awkward locations.

Precise cutting with the pull-stroke technique

The blade geometry and pull-cutting action allow accurate cutting without excessive pressure.

For optimum performance, use the full available blade length and guide the movement smoothly without forcing the cut.

Replaceable blade for a longer tool life

The Super KENRYÛ 742W is equipped with a replaceable blade.

The original 270 mm RAZORSAW S793 replacement blade allows the beech wood handle and sheath to be retained when the teeth become worn or damaged.

This replaceable design helps extend the saw's service life and avoids unnecessary replacement of its other components.

Blade care and replacement

Regular maintenance helps preserve the cutting performance and service life of your Japanese pruning saw.

Cleaning the blade

After each use, remove wood chips, sawdust and plant residues from the blade.

For deposits of sap, resin or tannins, use a cleaning product suitable for saw blades, such as RAZORSAW Yanipika.

Dry the blade thoroughly before returning it to its sheath. For long-term storage, apply a thin protective film of oil, such as Kurobara Tsubaki camellia oil.

Caring for the beech wood handle and sheath

Avoid prolonged exposure of the handle and sheath to moisture or intense heat.

After use in the rain, allow the wooden components to dry naturally before putting the tool away for storage.

Replacing the blade

When the teeth become worn or damaged, replace the blade with the original RAZORSAW S793 replacement blade.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions when removing and fitting the blade.

Niwashi advice for efficient, tree-friendly pruning

For a clean, controlled cut, let the teeth work on the pull stroke without applying excessive pressure on the return stroke.

When removing heavy branches, make an undercut or relief cut before the final cut to prevent bark tearing.

When removing a branch, position the final cut with respect to the branch bark ridge and branch collar to support the tree's natural wound closure and compartmentalisation processes.

A clean, properly guided blade suited to the branch diameter helps achieve efficient cuts while preserving pruning quality and, consequently, tree health.
