Japanese sharpening stone, with concave, convex and flat part, with coarse grain size #220, ideal for coarse sharpening and repairing chipped blades of secateurs, shears, sickles, knives and other cutting tools.
Material : Silicon carbide (ceramic).
Dimensions :
Length : 135 mm
Width : 20 mm
Height : 30 mm
Weight : 130 g.
The upper part is convex, perfect for curved blades such as sickles or the counter-blades of secateurs.
The bottom is slightly concave, reducing friction and making it easier to sharpen the flat parts of blades.
The sides are perfectly flat for deburring the back of blades in 1 or 2 passes.
Soak the stone for about 5 minutes before use.
It is very important to allow the stone to soak properly before use and to wet it regularly during use to prevent it from drying out.
However, to preserve it, do not leave it in water unnecessarily.
Using the concave part of the stone, make cross passes from the base of the blade towards the tip, respecting the initial angle of the edge of your tool, until a burr forms on the back of the blade (about ten passes are generally sufficient). Be careful, this #220 stone is relatively soft and will mark more easily. Be sure to spread the passes over the entire surface of the stone so as not to wear it out in one place.
When the burr is formed, hold the flat side of the stone (its flank) flat against the back of the blade to deburr (just remove the burr).
One or two flat strokes are sufficient. Never sharpen the back of the blade !
It is very rare to need to sharpen the counter-blade of a secateur. However, they can wear out over time. In this case, use the convex part of the stone to match the inner angle of the counter-blade and proceed as above. Never sharpen the back of the counter-blade !
To get the best out of the Japanese steel, we recommend repeating the operation with a stone with a finer grit of #1000 or a diamond file #600. #1000 grit seems to us to be the minimum required for a good cut on gardening tools made of carbon steel.
Finally, rinse the stone with water and allow it to dry in the shade before putting it away.
Do not leave your stone to soak for too long, do not expose it to frost and avoid shocks !
We advise you to store it in your workshop and to take a resistant tool with you, such as a #320 diamond file, which is available in the shop, on the working site or when travelling.
