Kurobara Tsubaki Camellia Oil for Japanese Tools – 100 ml
A handy 100 ml size for protecting your Japanese secateurs, shears and other carbon steel tools after use.
Japanese carbon steel tools offer outstanding cutting performance, but they require a little regular care to stay in excellent condition. Once cleaned and thoroughly dried, applying a thin film of oil helps protect metal surfaces from moisture, rust and corrosion.
Hamono Tsubaki 刃物椿, made in Japan by Kurobara Honpo, is specially formulated for the maintenance of cutting tools. Odourless and non-drying, it helps protect steel blades while also lubricating pivots and moving parts.
It is particularly suitable for maintaining Japanese secateurs, uekibasami, garden shears, Japanese saws, knives, sickles and other carbon steel tools.
100 ml: the ideal size for occasional gardeners
If you own a few quality tools and simply want to keep them properly maintained after use, this 100 ml bottle is ideal for home gardeners and occasional use.
Its compact size takes up very little space and can easily be stored with your sharpening and maintenance equipment or directly in your tool bag.
The bottle is also fitted with an inner stopper designed to reduce the risk of leakage during transport. Remove it before first use.
For professional gardeners or anyone maintaining several tools on a regular basis, we also offer Hamono Tsubaki Camellia Oil in a 245 ml bottle, a more economical size for frequent use.
Protecting carbon steel from rust
Unlike stainless steel, the carbon steels traditionally used for many Japanese tools can oxidise when exposed to moisture.
Simple, regular maintenance considerably reduces this risk.
After use, remove soil, sap and plant residue from the blades. Dry them thoroughly, then apply a very thin film of oil to the metal surfaces before storing the tool.
This simple routine helps protect the steel and keep your tools working properly for many years.
Niwashi care advice
After cleaning and thoroughly drying your tool:
- apply a few drops of oil to the metal parts;
- spread a thin film over blades and surfaces requiring protection;
- lubricate the pivot and moving parts of secateurs and shears;
- distribute the oil evenly with a soft cloth and wipe away any excess.
Take care of your fingers when wiping close to a cutting edge!
For quick and regular application, you can also use an Abura Tsubo, a traditional Japanese oil pot fitted with an applicator pad.
An important note about "Camellia Oil”
Camellia oil has traditionally been used in Japan for maintaining and protecting steel blades and tools.
However, Hamono Tsubaki 刃物椿 is not pure camellia oil. It is a formulation specifically intended for the care and maintenance of tools and cutlery.
According to Kurobara Honpo, it contains:
- mineral oil;
- camellia seed oil;
- triethylhexanoin, an ester oil also used as an emollient;
- Yellow 204 colouring.
This product is neither a food oil nor a cosmetic oil.
Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth and wash your hands after use.
